Il dipinto mostra una natura morta con una pernice, in una chiara citazione a Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin. Il registro compositivo presenta una tripartizione netta tra i colori scuri e chiari, in riferimento allo sfondo e al piano e al bordo del tavolo. La pennellata usata da Prevosto per la pernice è materica e grassa nel corpo, invece nella testa è quasi completamente assente; si vede la tela nuda, bianca, priva di preparazione colorata, dove c’è un breve segno grafico che accenna all’occhio. La testa così accentua la morte dell’animale, contrastata dai fiori colorati vicino al volatile.

The painting shows a still life with a partridge, in a clear reference to Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin. The compositional register shows a clear tripartition between dark and light colours, with reference to the background and the table top and edge. The brushstroke used by Prevosto for the ptarmigan is textural and fat in the body, whereas in the head it is almost completely absent; one sees the bare, white canvas, devoid of coloured preparation, where there is a brief graphic sign hinting at the eye. The head thus accentuates the death of the animal, contrasted by the coloured flowers near the bird.
