L'opera riprende come idea il concetto di Giacomo Leopardi di "natura matrigna", che genera la vita ma senza prendersi cura del nascituro e non impattando positivamente nel relativo destino. La madre che allatta il figlio in "Natura matrigna" rappresenta proprio la natura, che, in modo aleatorio determina il futuro del bambino già a partire dal contesto geografico di nascita, che potrà influire totalmente sulle condizioni della sua vita senza particolari meriti o demeriti razionali.

Dunque un distacco netto dalla locuzione latina homo faber fortunae suae, già a partire dai limiti imposti da eventuali condizioni avverse costruite con innocente crudeltà dalla natura.
Nel dettaglio, la mano della madre che tiene il bambino lo sorregge, ma in modo quasi minaccioso: le unghie sembrano artigli di un rapace, dimostrando un senso di amore materno ma anche di distacco. In quest'ottica, nel dipinto fluisce una sostanza che nutre il bambino – che presenta occhi alienati - ma allo stesso tempo lo avvelena.

L'opera è ispirata a Marlene Dumas, come si evince dall'uso della pittura e dalle pennellate fluide. L'artista gioca infatti con materie pittoriche diverse, tra acquerello e pittura a olio. Il risultato è una fluidità di materia, con colori, a parte il rosa carnicino, timbrici e istintivi, proprio come il giallo sopra il volto del bambino.

The work echoes Giacomo Leopardi’s concept of “natura matrigna” (“stepmother nature”), which generates life without caring for the baby, without having a positive influence on them. The mother breastfeeding her child in "Natura matrigna" represents nature, which in a casual way determines the child’s future, already starting from the geographical context of birth, which may totally influence the conditions of their life without any rational merits or demerits.

So, a stark departure from the Latin locution homo faber fortunae suae (man is the architect of his own destiny), already from the limits imposed by any adverse conditions, which were crafted with innocent cruelty by nature.
Going into detail, the mother’s hand holding the child supports him, but in an almost threatening way: the nails look like the claws of a raptor and show material love, but also detachment. In the painting flows a substance that nourishes the child – whose eyes are alienated – but at the same time poisons him.

Inspiration comes from Marlene Dumas, as evidenced by the use of painting and fluid brushstrokes. The artist plays with different pictorial materials, including watercolor and oil paint. The result is a smoothness of matter, with mostly tonal and instinctive colors, just like the yellow above the child's face.
